Traditions of the Quinceañera include:

  • A special tiered cake. Normally spectacular in it's features, the cake ties into the theme of the fiesta.
  • The honored girl gives a speech in from of her whole family and friends.
  • Lightening of 17 candles... Sixteen candles are dedicated to a specific person in their lives. THe 17th candle is dedicated to someone who is no longer with the birthday girl (someone who may have died prior to her birthday). After each candle is lit, the birthday girl gives a small speech honoring that person who is dear to their heart.
  • Grand Entrance of the birthday girl is a must. It can be made through an archway, through curtains parting, from a swing being lowered to the ground from the ceiling, by sitting on a throne.
  • Arriving in a limo, a carriage, etc.
  • A church blessing prior to the celebration.
  • Photographer is present to capture the moment.
  • Videographer is present to capture the moment on film.
  • The dress is by far referred to as the most important aspect of the quinceañera. Click here to purchase one. Approximately 5% of the grand total is spent on the dress alone.
  • Father changes his daughters shoes in a formal presentation from flats to high heels.
  • Father claims the first dance typically a waltz then passes her onto her brothers and grandfather ending with her escort.
  • Like a Broadway show many girls take dancing lessons, singing lessons, and have a show specially choreographed for themselves and their court.
  • The last doll is presented which typically looks like the birthday girl herself dressed in the same quinceanera dress as the birthday girl. The girl cradles the doll to symbolize the end of her childhood. The doll is either kept as a keepsake or given away to a younger sister or tossed like a wedding bouquet to the children attending the quinceanera.
  • Cuban quinceañera's typically hire Mexican mariachis to sing the traditional "Las Mañanitas.
  • Court of 14 dama and chambelanes. Each couple represents a year of the quinceañera's life.
  • The birthday girl wears a tiara.
  • Quinceanera classes and retreats with the church and becoming popular.
  • A big reception held in a ballroom (or see themes for more ideas).
  • Photographs of the birthday girl from age 0 to age 15 on the wall or showing on a DVD movie screen.
  • Introduction of her Court then the birthday girl herself.
  • Receiving an esclava, the name for a type of identity bracelet with the birthday girls name engraved on it.
